first_imgAiming to pick up traffic from regional areas, Qantas has added up to 180,000 additional seats on its services flying intra-Western Australia.Commencing yesterday the carrier increased capacity between Perth and Karratha, Newman, Paraburdoo, Port Hedland and Broome through new services and aircraft upgrade. In a statement Qantas Group executive commercial Rob Gurney explained the increase was a response to growing demand within the state.“Western Australia is a very important market for Qantas and we will continue to monitor demand to support regional communities, tourism operators and the resources sector,” Mr Gurney said.Extra capacity includes three new return services between Perth and Karratha as well as an upgrade of four return services from a B717 to a B737 each week, four additional flights between Perth and Newman weekly as well as three new Perth to Paraburdoo services per week.Portland is also expected to see the upgrade of three of its return services to Perth from the B717 to the B737 weekly, while Perth and Broome will see the same upgrade on one of its return services per week.“The changes will see around nine additional return services per week and 3466 seats per week added to the market and include the upgrade of several services from B717 to B737 aircraft,” Mr Gurney added.“On an annualised basis, this equates to more than 180,000 additional seats.”Earlier this month the carrier launched new services between Perth and Geraldton and confirmed that it would increase frequency on the route in January next year from two to 11 return services per week.
